Do things just happen ??

Just finished watching a movie titled "A serious man " by the coen brothers. It is based on the Book of Job , where God tests Job's faith on him . There can be two interpretation , as i see it, of the movie.

The first one being that everything just happens. There is no deeper meaning, no rationalization . It's something like the fact that earth was created after the big bang because all the conditions happened to be there at the right moment. A slight variation and i would not be writing this.

The second could be ( in line with the actual Job story) that till the point the protagonist remains true to his religion he faces a number of grave problems but none actually materializes. And even if they do, he is in some way able to face them. But the moment he sways from the righteous path , as shown at the end , imminent catastrophic dangers happen.

What i want to ask is the relevance of destiny in our lives. What we are today or will be in the future , is the result of our actions alone or other factors . I know we are taught to work hard and do our best et al. But does the happenings in our lives, incidents around us have a more important role ?

What chance does a child born in abject poverty in one of the forgotten villages of India has ,even if he possess the same brain capacity as that of a nobel prize winning MIT physicist ?

    I'd have to say the chances are a million to one, but miracles do happen. I believe that true talent always finds a way to get out, even when not given ample opportunity.

  2. Suvid Says:

    Brilliantly written..
    However, I believe that everyone has the spirit to make something of himself.. It is only a matter of what he wants to achieve and what he is content with.. A nobel prize winning scientist is not the pedestal everyone wants to reach.. Even if the guy wants to get the government clerk job that his father never got, he is a success in his own eyes if he gets it..

  3. Shalin Shekhar Mangar Says:

    The chances are very slim. Anything otherwise is a miracle and by definition, it happens rarely.

    @Sid
    I don't think true talent always finds a way. The only examples you may know about are the ones who did manage to get out of the rut. Life is very hard at the bottom of the pyramid.

    @Shalin
    Suvid actually answered for me here, success is relative. I agree that life is hard at the bottom, but talent never goes completely to waste.

    If you would just humour me here, I would take the example of a recent Bollywood movie - Rocket Singh. The guy knows his talents and uses them to his advantage even when he's at the bottom of the pyramid and sans opportunity. Too idealistic maybe, but as I said, humour me :)

  5. Manas Says:

    @Sid : I know its good to be an optimist but i have agree with Shalin on this one.

    @ Suvid : Truly spoken and thats why contenetment is not a function of money and achievement in absolute terms but relative.

  6. Echo Says:

    You didn't ask all the questions here :) why do the "other forces" exist, or do we have an effect on them... is it a null set after all?
